What Business Blogging is Missing

I was reading a post by Megan Glover over at the wonderful company Compendium (check them out) called 5 Blogging Goals Every Marketer Should Consider. Her post is excellent but there was one thing missing: the human touch.

Here are the top 5 Blogging Goals Every Marketer Should Consider:

1. Increase organic search traffic.

2. Boost referral traffic to my website.

3. Generate more inbound leads.

4. Increase email and catalog subscriptions.

5. Sell more product.

Now before you go all haywire on me and send hate mail… I do think this list is excellent but there is a part of me that still holds onto the communication goals of every marketer and PR firm:

1. Communication: You should email all commenters and give them a “Thank You” for posting on your blog.

2. Talk About What YOU Do: Your personality needs to shine through no matter what you are selling. Tell stories about helping clients and clients helping each other.

It is really dependent on your strategy and the product you sell but there is always the chance that you will focus TOO much on selling your product or service and alienate the people that could become TRUE evangelists.

If you want to become a thought leader in you industry you need to talk more about What You Do not about your product.

Kyle, I totally agree to your addition. I just read an article in USA Today that talks about this lady who works for a cake decorating company. She mentions how she started updating her status on Facebook, writing about what she was doing at work. Her sales went up 15-20%. She mentions that people should just write about what they love.

(I just wrote a paper about using online social networking for marketing research–in honor of you, of course–for one of my classes.)

I still suck at actually emailing people who comment on The Lost Jacket. I do however try and respond to any and all comments on my blog. But you are right…I don't think that is good enough to a certain extent. Will step up my game :) .

I'm having trouble with my "Call to Action"… any website / article / book suggestions? Great article!

Increasing organic google hits is a must. These hits keep on coming even when your not doing anything! But it comes down to your SEO and post content. Really an overlooked spot but something that has to be considered. Everyone uses google so you better be in those search results!

I think you're absolutely right, especially your second addition. In fact, I think if you do a whole lot of it, the previous 5 items you list will happen.

This is why I keep learning from Kyle and read every articles he posted.

Apart from having great articles and wonderful thoughts, he never misses to COMMUNICATE with people and engage with followers.

I think I have reposted his articles a lot on Twitter. I never asked to be noticed or thanked, I simply wanted to share the articles which I found really helpful. But having to know that Kyle appreciates what I did is an awesome feeling. Moreover, it opens the opportunity to communicate with him and showed that he is not one of those 'untouchable' people.

    Great post, Kyle, as always!
