Most of us have a close group of friends in which we share time and energy. Being of the millennial generation (24 years old) most of my close friends are under the age of 30. I attended a going away party for a friend moving to Nashville, TN and we had the normal conversation centered around sports and daily life. Occasionally our conversation shifts to the Internet where we discuss Second Life, blogging, social media, and other topics of interest.
Being a Social Media Nerd, I am usually the individual who talks about certain topics and new things I learned on FriendFeed and through my Google Reader. The interesting thing about all of this is the face that my friends are complete novices when it comes to the idea of blogging and social media. I mean most of us are on Facebook but the majority of my millennial friends have no idea how to blog.
It was an interesting concept to consider. Many of the individuals I follow on FriendFreed, Twitter, and through Google Reader are over 30. Is micro-blogging/twitter/sms more of a communication medium rather than blogging for the millennial generation?
I know that I haven’t completed any type of research centered around this topic but it struck me as odd that I do not know of any millennial (in my social circle) that were blogging regularly. Other than Brad Ward of SquaredPeg. Does anyone have research catered to this subject?
Are we going to see a decrease in “true” blogging?
Here is a question to consider – you say most of the bloggers you follow are over 30.. but when did they start blogging? Were they in their 20′s
Good blogging requires a consistent effort. Is it that younger folks don’t blog now because of time, distractions, shorter attention span ( that may or may not improve with age) or is it that they truly never will?

It’s a good point, but like Larraine mentioned above… I wouldn’t say this is a ‘generational’ gap… it’s just an age group gap. People around my age 18-25 have other things more important in their life like socializing, studying, partying, etc etc

I told my cousin that I blog and she laughed at me. She had to do it for a class project and hated it.
I think it takes a particular type of person as well. Blogging isn’t for everyone. I think Facebook creates an easy portal for everyone to connect without a lot of thought. A lot of the millennial generation (which I’m a part of) is focused lazy right now. We’re 20-somethings…we can do anything we want. And right now…blogging/twitter etc isn’t high on the priority list.
Just as we always talk about niche social communities online…blogging is in and of itself a niche community. And because of this niche…I don’t think we’ll see a lack of ‘true’ blogging…honestly I see it becoming more authentic as people who are currently doing it do it more.
Yea true… it can only get better as more people are involved and discover it… and yes, Facebook and blogging are totally different.
I know so many people who will spend hours and hours on Myspace and Facebook… but no other ‘social media’ interests beyond that. Facebook doesn’t require any kind of thought beyond commenting on someone’s latest photos.
Josh and Justin you are completely right! It is unbelievable the amount of time people spend on Facebook and Myspace.
It is hard to imagine spending more than an hour online and not bringing anything away from it.
