I am not a huge fan of Auto DMs. To be honest with you I hate them. There are a few times when Auto DMs on Twitter should be used but most of the time the answer is no. I wanted to start a Twitter Auto DM petition.
Reasons Why You Would Sign
1. You find Auto DMs completely void of personality.
2. You find Auto DMs are not genuine.
3. You just dislike Auto DMs in general.
Sign below in the comment form if you dislike Auto DMs. Steal the logo and put it on your page. Spread the wealth. Spread the info.
Or if you completely disagree with what WE are doing..
That works too.

I’ve got to agree. 99.9% of DMs are exactly what you say. I don’t do it, and don’t reply to or follow their links in general.
I’m not a fan of the auto-dm and if you check my profile, you’ll see I’m not a fan of the auto anything. I like to know a little bit about who I’m following . The same goes for the Auto DM – isn’t automatically sending out an dm almost the same as spam? Just sayin. When I DM you, I’ll try to make it be with something of value.
@northernchick
I’m with you! It never made sense to me why someone would auto-DM to tell a “clickmyjunk” message, when I’ve obviously already found them interesting (and likely even visited their site already)

I agree 100%. I do not like them. They take away the whole social network idea. Instant turn-off.
Here’s my signature on the list.
I really hate the little buzz on my cell phone telling me I have a message only to discover I have an auto responder telling me I can visit their website, sign up for a newsletter I don’t want or buy a life supply of something I don’t need.
Can I sign twice?
Signed!
Agreed & signed! Fortunately we can’t get replies in Canada or that would drive me nutty!
If I want auto responders I’ll sign up for them.
semi signed seeing more ppl using them with thought although twice as many as before now using without one ounce of thought!
Down with Auto DMs!
You’re turning into a social media hippy (smippy?)! Three reasons to use the DM:
1. An instantaneous confirmation of your subscription.
2. An opportunity to expand the followers’ knowledge of where to find you online.
3. A little Twitter never heard anyone. If it did, get a thicker skin.
/s/ Signed. If I have more than one Twitter account, does that count as more than one sig. on the petition? I am a control freak by nature and I want control over whether anything is done to or for me automatically. The only “Auto” I like is the little Accord sitting out in my garage and that only cuz she’s paid for.
Down with Auto DMs!
I love you to death, Douglas, you already know that, but I gotta disagree here:
1. An instantaneous confirmation of your subscription.
That’s not really necessary. I get notified when people follow and unfollow me; that’s enough.
2. An opportunity to expand the followers’ knowledge of where to find you online.
If they filled out their profile correctly, that’s all that’s needed. If they don’t understand how to do that, they probably can’t contribute much more of value until they understand how to use Twitter properly. That’s a personal pecadillo of mine. Incomplete or nonexistent profile info.
3. A little Twitter never heard anyone. If it did, get a thicker skin.
That’s what Unfollow and Block are for, god love ‘em.
@doug if they want to read about you they can follow your RTs or your posts. People know they are subscribed to you. They are the one that followed.
If you are using Twitter just as a promotional tool do me a favor and unfollow me.
I didn’t mean you unfollow me, Doug.:-)
Just trashed my Auto DM account. Was just trying it on. I’m converted and happy with one less site/account to worry about.
I get too many e-mails as it is. If I could just report as spam just the Auto-DM and not all Twitter DMs I would.

HATE Auto Responders! If I followed you chances are I checked you out and thought you were cool to follow… you corrected me by sending an auto responder! LOL
Sign me up. While I can see Doug’s reasoning for the auto DMs, I guess what bugs me is the pseudo-personalization that comes with them.
DM: “Hi. Looking forward to learning more about you.”
Me: Really? Then visit my blog and sign up for the RSS feed. Don’t forget to buy my book when it comes out. THEN you’ll learn more about me.
Okay so here is a true story….
I finally decided to recruit several new tweeters to follow on Saturday. I added around 80 throughout the course of the day. Then it started…my phone was blowing up with massive amounts of direct messages from them. I first thought to myself that they were genuine, but after the first 25 I began to catch on. I then thought to myself maybe this is a good idea, maybe this can help me promote my blog. So I started looking through the Direct Messages I was receiving and I clicked on one…it was some coaching blog and they were trying to sell me something. Needless to say I will not be setting up my auto DM now…and I will be signing your petition.
It should be enough that someone chooses to follow you. An automatic message just isn’t necessary. So, consider my name on the list too.
A colleague of mine once said: “The point at which we can’t manage the time it takes to welcome someone we’re genuinely interested in is the point at which we should stop and find someone other way to network.”
What do you think? Kyle, you know where I stand on this one.
I am not a fan of the typical “thanks for the follow, please click on my blog…” Auto DM’s at all! I rarely click through to these links…
BUT I DO send out an Auto DM to all my new followers which is a very short “hello VIDEO” from me, and i get a very good response from it as it stands out really well in the crowd of unpersonal messages. I cannot send an individual on to every single person, but at least if they watch the vid, they see who i am for REAL!!
I am unable to “Sign” the petition as i do use the service, but totally understand where you are coming from.
@emilylagrange
Signed.

I hate auto DM!Just as bad as magpie!
@mayhemstudios
I totally agree. Auto DMs are a letdown.
One thing I like about Twitter is when people are real.
@ryanbruce
Kyle – So agree! I received one a few days ago wich said “I Like You”, visit my site at http://www.xxx.com. Wait – How do you know if you like me?
So superficial and exactly the opposite of what social media is.
No Like DM…DM Very Bad.
@russell_cook
Auto-DMs are the equivalent of reaching into the jacked of and stuffing your card into the wallet of someone you’ve just met. You could lose an arm that way, will CERTAINLY lose followers. There are too many penny-ante SEOs living in mom’s basement who tell people this is a good idea. WE MUST DESTROY THEM!
Um…”jacket”. SEE how upset I am?
Count me in!
Count me in puhlease. I get way too much mail as it is, and it just pisses me off when one of these things.
At first i thought “They like me, they really like me”, and then I realized they’d done an online marketing thing with some guru who just discovered Twitter last summer and told them it was the coming marketing thing.
What’s the point of Twitter and a Twitter profile if you feel the need to send me a DM with your website (which should be in your profile, duh).
PS if you want to market to me do it the old fashioned way, buy some leads and call me if my name is on the list:)

I think that auto-DM’s are not genuine and that they create a false sense of popularity of Twitter profiles who use them.
I hate to see someones profile with thousands of followers and following with only a couple of tweets.
They don’t make my blood boil, but they are mildly annoying.

Simply put, Auto-DMs suck. Way to go! I'll sign and retweet!
What you said.

Auto-dm has ruined the dm feature on twitter. I have so much auto-generated crap that if someone really wants to reach me for a legitimate reason it gets lost. Not cool.
Kill it!

Auto DMs are lazy and show a lack of respect to the follower.

Signed, sealed, delivered.
I find auto-DMs annoying. It doesn't ruin my day or anything but it's a bit irritating. I'll jump in and say "down with auto-DMs", as well

Auto DM's are impersonal and unnecessary.
We are using "social" media to invoke conversation and learn about others. Sending an auto DM is one sided and takes away from the social aspect.
Most auto DM's are people flogging their "free" wares. Not cool at all.
Let's talk and get to know each other. How can we help each other with business? that is what it is all about.

DESPISE auto DM. I got on Twitter to follow people who are either inspiring or informative. When you auto DM me you are neither.
For Twitter automation i've got to say Twimbo from iq143.com was one of the easiest to set up and one of the more intelligent bots.
It only took a few minutes to set up and it's currently priced low for early adopters. My traffic has doubled since using it and I now have a great following on Twitter. I've even had new paying customers as a result! Winner.

Gets me irked with the ads like eyelid surgery Philadelphia. I hope they moderate the dm's.
Nice petition. There is nothing worse when you follow someone on Twitter and you get a generic "Thanks for following me. Check out my site…". No, I am not going to check out your site and I am no longer going to follow you.
