Deleting 20,000 Followers from Twitter

Holy crap. I just read one of the best blog posts ever.

Jim Connolly just deleted 20,000 followers from Twitter. I about passed out from bewilderment. Talk about a way to focus more on quality over quantity! If you want an example of how to refocus your social media efforts read the blog post by Jim. When you read the post focus on the sections of Tweeting again “small time” and The “right” was to use Twitter.”

The most important thing to take away from Jim deleting his 20,000 followers is the understanding that we are constantly learning and adapting as the environment of communication changes. Jim decided to do what was best for him in the long run. I can’t imagine getting 400-500 direct messages a day. My face would literally blow up!

When you are starting social media as a small business owner or as another just another lover/user (sounds like a heroine addict) it is important to read and learn from the “professionals” but remember to do what is best for you personally.

I couldn’t handle 20,000 followers. It is hard for me to create valuable relationships with over 2,000! If you are creating relationships with 200 followers. Good! You are living out the idea of quality over quantity.

And that is what matters…

    Having just joined the Twitter Bandwagon, i must say i’m both excited and a little confused. All these people are adding me, and broadcasting tweets about how to get more followers, how to be more viral.

    It seems to me that Twitter is all about promoting Twitter. Is this the case? Perhaps it’s just the ‘online marketing’ circle of people i’ve attracted.

    I’ve been thinking this from the beginning. I think I even said so much in a comment to one of your previous posts. The brain drain that can occur with keeping up with all the social networking apps can be huge until you put each one in its’ place, both mentally and physically (when you use and how often).

    You’ve been doing some great blogging of late, thanks.

    Agreed Kyle and Brett – smaller is better. While I’m no twitter superstar, I almost prefer it that way. All those that I follow, I target by industry, and generally truly enjoy reading what these folks have to say. I can’t say that I’ve been to every single one of their personal pages (some don’t even have one), but I have been to quite a few of them, and make it a point to regularly interact with those that I follow both on and off twitter.

    that’s a lot of messages to be getting daily… that’s for sure.

    I am trying to build my twitter relationships daily! over 2k now… it’s a little bit of work!

    One deletes 20,000 for the same reason farmers have set fire to acres of farm land.
    To perge the land of weeds and pest.

    Quality does matter every time. Yet I can’t help but feel that Jim is to blame – he allowed the network to build, he didn’t have to follow everyone that followed him.

    What about the people that he deleted that may be unaware of it and were genuine followers? Do they just get forgotten?

    I don’t see the logic in complaining about the noise when you’re the user of the megaphone.

    hah! and i thought i was strange deleting dormant digg ‘friends who had several 0′s next to the account history. and deleting twitter friends who follow more than 300. why?
    Imagine getting several RTs about the same news all day, getting shouts about useless ‘news’ articles… i could go on. i shall not. more people need to make real connections with the networks they are forming. or social networks will crumble the same way online chat rooms collapsed.

    Great post. I learned about Jim through twitter and was shocked when I found out he was leaving it due to what was going on with his account and the so many people he was following.

    It’s great to see Jim back and I agree that quality is by far much better than quantity. There is no way you could read 20,000 tweets, it doesn’t build relationships and you won’t learn as much. I use twitter to learn and build relationships and I follow those who are follow worthy in my opinion.

    Those who call us twitter snobs have diminished the true value that twitter could bring to us by expecting to be followed back instead of providing value and becoming follow worthy. That’s why you see so many people with thousands of followers and following thousands with only a few updates. That’s wrong.

    I agree wtih Jim. For relationship building and business, I chose from the start to follow those whom I could best learn from or share with. Not concrete rules, but I’m a journalist, social media nut and into personal development – so that’s where I’m putting my energy.

    There are many ways to use Twitter, as there are of course many ways to use the force. The common soul, the energy that flows within us all, we attention craving info-addicted human collective unites and shares on Twitter in a new way, and tomorrow they’ll be another way, and you’ll still walk by 10,000 people a day in NYC and not stop and say hi, but take it in. It’s awesome, let’s just ride the wave and get out of it what we want, share what works, befriend who we can, and love and prosper in a quest for peace.
